What is a Visa Merchant Agent?

A Visa Merchant Agent is a Merchant Agent that is able to process Visa debit and credit card payments beyond 31 December 2012 because they have satisfied the data security standards set by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and therefore, Visa.

What is PCI DSS?

PCI DSS aka the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard is a worldwide standard supported by the largest global credit card companies, including Visa and MasterCard. It is a set of guidelines coupled with robust audit and certification for organisations wishing to accept credit and debit card payments and store the data collected within their business. The Open Payment System is compliant with PCI DSS standards.

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a system of accepting credit and debit card payments on your website and receiving independent verification from the card issuer that the card being used is valid and authorised to make the transaction. This is achieved by the card holder setting up a password with the card issuer which is entered during the payment transaction on the card issuers own website.

It is called 3D Secure because there are three parties involved in the transaction: the party taking the payment, the party making the payment and the card issuer. 3D Secure is often called 'Chip and Pin for the Internet'. It is based on the same principles but the underlying technology is very different.
